The Charismatic Renewal is a movement of prayer and praise that allows people to enter into an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ; recognizing him as the only King and Lord of the Universe. This movement has its roots in the experience of the group that accompanied Jesus, that days after his Resurrection, on the day of Pentecost, he gave them the Holy Spirit, renewing with his gifts the Apostles, enabling them under his action to proclaim the Gospel to all cultures and realities. “But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will receive power and you will go out to all parts of the world to give testimony of me, in Jerusalem all the region of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth”
(Acts 1: 8).
How did the Charismatic Renewal come about? It had its origins in 1967, when a group led by William Storey and Ralph Keifer, two laic professors from the University of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, in the United States, decided to pray with some students to ask for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. In a short time the movement spread to other universities, such as Notre Dame, in Indiana and East Lansing, in Michigan. Another propagator of the charismatic movement in the Catholic Church was the Pentecostal Pastor David du Plessis, who contributed to bringing the new Catholic movement closer to the different currents of Protestant Pentecostalism. The Reverend Du Plessis participated in the Council of the Churches of 1954 and 1961, and was invited to officiate as a Pentecostal representative at the II Vatican Council.
In 1970 the Charismatic Movement expanded beyond the borders of the United States, reaching our present days in more than 115 countries of the world.
In our community of St. Joseph, the Charismatic Renewal is made present through the Prayer Group, where the XXXVII anniversary was recently celebrated, with the participation in the coordination of more than a dozen laic people renewed in the Holy Spirit.
We meet on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. We pray, we sing praises to the Lord, we invoke the Holy Spirit. The message of the Lord’s word is given. The Word of God is shared, and adoration is made to the Most Holy.
Participation once a month in the liturgical service. The prayer of the Holy Rosary is addressed as Ushers, Ministers of the Eucharist, and Proclaimers of the Word.
